Film Resources & Viewing Guide — Science Fiction Unit

Afrofuturism  •  Hero  •  Identity  •  Power

Three resources support your viewing of the film: a presentation introducing the archetypal hero pattern and asking whether T'Challa fits it — a presentation on Afrofuturism exploring how Wakanda imagines Africa's future — and a viewing guide with structured activities to complete as the film plays and reflect on afterwards.

Black Panther: Archetypal Hero or Something New?

A king returns home to defend a nation caught between tradition and the modern world — and a rival who forces him to question everything. The introductory presentation traces Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey and examines five key ways T'Challa both fits and breaks the archetypal pattern: his ordinary world is already extraordinary, his villain has a legitimate point, and his heroism is inseparable from his community and his culture. The viewing guide pairs with the film itself, directing your attention to Afrofuturism in action — how Wakanda blends advanced technology with African cultural tradition — and to the deeper questions of who holds power, who is allowed to imagine the future, and what T'Challa's final choice reveals about duty, identity, and justice.
