CHAPTER 5 CONTEXT:

It is Saturday. Tsotsi has the baby hidden in the ruins. This chapter pulls the camera back to show us the consequences of Friday night: Gumboot's burial, Boston's awakening, and the gang's uncertain future.

Fugard uses the metaphor of a broken "mechanism" — something has tampered with the machinery of Tsotsi's life.

Rule 1 (no questions): Rule 2 (no names): Rule 3 (the past is dangerous):

DURING READING: MONITOR & RESPOND

Monitoring + Regulating

3. Comprehension check-in: This chapter moves between multiple perspectives. Rate your understanding of each (1 = lost, 5 = clear).

Section / Perspective Rating (1–5) What confused me / what I did about it
Rev. Ransome and the burial of Gumboot; the cemetery
Boston's painful awakening in the alley
Butcher and Die Aap waiting; the gang's uncertain future
Tsotsi rejoins the gang; the "tampered mechanism"

4. Double-Entry Journal: Choose two passages that struck you — whether you understood them or not.

The Text (quote or describe the passage with page number)My Thinking (what I thought, felt, questioned, connected)

5. Perspective Map: This chapter shows us the aftermath of Friday night through different eyes. What does each perspective reveal that Tsotsi's perspective alone could not?

AFTER READING: REFLECT & CONNECT

Self-Knowledge

Essential Question: "Can people fundamentally change who they are? What causes people to commit acts of violence?"

Think about: What does it mean that Tsotsi has been living mechanically? What does the baby introduce that a machine cannot process?
