BEFORE READING: Preparing My Mind

1. Chapter One showed Rama as a warrior who kills demons and disciplines himself under a sage’s authority. Chapter Two is called “The Bride.” Before you read, what shift do you expect this title to signal? Do you anticipate that Narayan will treat romantic desire as compatible with dharma, or in tension with it — and why do you think that?

2. At the end of Chapter One, Narayan tells us that Viswamithra “knew by foresight that it was but the beginning of a great series of events.” What does it do to your reading when an author signals in advance that events are destined? Do you find that kind of foreshadowing increases or reduces tension, and why?

3. Look back at your Comprehension Check-In ratings. Select the section you rated lowest and identify as precisely as you can what caused the difficulty. Then describe what you did — or what you could now do — to address it. Be specific: “I was confused” is the beginning of an answer, not the whole answer.

4. Narayan gives us access to both Rama’s and Sita’s inner experience of falling in love — but neither can see what the other is feeling. Describe what this technique of parallel, separated interiority does to your experience as a reader. Then explain what you think Narayan is suggesting about the nature of desire by showing it from both sides simultaneously.

5. Janaka created the bow condition because he could not, as a king, show favoritism among competing suitors — and now fears it will doom his daughter to remaining unmarried forever. He says: “I tremble when I think of Sita’s future.” Compare Janaka’s dilemma here to Dasaratha’s in Chapter One. What do these two fathers have in common, and what does the pattern suggest about the text’s view of parenthood and duty?

6. In Chapter One, dharma required painful sacrifice (Dasaratha sending Rama away; Rama killing Thataka against the warrior code). In Chapter Two, what Rama wants and what dharma requires are perfectly aligned — marrying Sita serves family duty, political alliance, and personal happiness. What does the existence of this chapter — a moment of harmony — contribute to the epic’s larger argument about duty and desire? Why might Narayan include it, knowing what comes later?

7. Thinking About Your Thinking: Return to your Before Reading responses. How accurate were your predictions about how Narayan would handle romantic desire? What specifically in the text confirmed, complicated, or overturned your expectations? Identify one moment in this chapter where your reading slowed down — not because of confusion, but because something made you genuinely stop and think — and describe what happened in your mind at that moment.
