BEFORE READING: Preparing My Mind

1. These two chapters are the final battle. After everything that has happened in this story, we are about to see Rama and Ravana face each other directly. Do you expect Rama to win easily, or do you think the ending will be more complicated than that? What kind of ending would feel satisfying to you?

2. Think about a time when something ended — a conflict, a competition, a long difficult period. Did the ending feel how you expected it to? Was there any moment of feeling something unexpected alongside the relief?

4. Ravana uses two powerful illusions in Chapter 11: a fake severed head of Rama shown to Sita, and a fake Sita killed in front of Rama’s army. Both almost work. Why might an attack on what someone believes — rather than an attack on their body — be more dangerous in a battle?

5. When Ravana finally dies, Narayan describes his face as showing serenity and peace — as if his lifelong fixation on Rama, even as an enemy, had become a kind of devotion in the end. This is one of the strangest moments in the book. What is your honest reaction to it?

6. After killing Ravana, Rama notices a scar on his back and immediately worries that he may have shot a retreating enemy. He has just won the whole war — and he is still checking whether he acted rightly. Then he sighs over the body: “What might he not have achieved but for the evil stirring within him.” What kind of winner does this make Rama? Does it change how you see him?
